2011 Catalogue
After many years I returned to landscape during 2010. This move was inspired by the series of small oil sketches I did in the life room. The technique itself seemed ripe to be turned to a new genre. After so many years of drawing from a model it’s something of a luxury to have a subject that doesn’t call ‘time up’, This allows me to keep working until the picture itself seems to reach a natural stop, resulting in far fewer pictures in the bin.
On the other hand a model certainly keeps far stiller. Landscape is never really at rest, the light keeps changing the sky keeps relentlessly moving across the picture. All of these studies were done outside. My plans for the coming year are to slowly increase the size and scope of these paintings.
